The SCDF responded to two accidents along Pioneer Road at about 6.30am. The first accident took place along Pioneer Road towards Tuas and involved a collision between two lorries. This resulted in one driver being trapped and one other person sustaining injuries.
The second accident, which occurred at the opposite side of Pioneer Road (about 50m away), was a collision between three lorries and as a result, 51 people were injured of which the driver and two passengers of the last lorry were trapped.
There were a total of 53 casualties as a result of these two accidents.
The SCDF despatched 2 fire engines, 1 support vehicle, 6 ambulances and 2 mass casualty ambulance buses to the scene, arriving within 8 minutes. The trapped casualties were swiftly released by SCDF using hydraulic spreader cutters and medical attention was immediately given to the others who were not trapped. 2 casualties (from the accident involving three lorries) suffered serious injuries while the other 51 sustained light to moderate injuries.
